Plan prices are one provider's published 2026 tiers (Strategic Micro Systems, Managed IT Services Cost Per User: A 2026 Pricing Guide). The in-house figure is the median salary for network and computer systems administrators (BLS OEWS May 2025 via O*NET OnLine, Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-VA-MD-WV: $125,430) divided by 0.70, because benefits are 30% of total compensation (BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation, June 2026). This is our calculation. Licenses, hardware and projects are extra either way, and one person cannot cover every hour.

District of Columbia breach notice rule: notify affected residents without unreasonable delay, with no fixed number of days. The DC Attorney General must also be notified when a breach involves 50 or more residents. The full rule and statute link are in our District of Columbia data breach notification law summary.

Managed IT services
Managed IT services are outsourced IT operations, including help desk, device and network management, backups and security monitoring, delivered under a recurring monthly contract with a defined scope.

What managed IT services cost in Washington, DC

Washington, DC businesses usually pay $100 to $250 per user per month for managed IT, the range published pricing guides show 1. Plans with heavier security reach $300 or more 2. A 25-person office should budget $30,000 to $75,000 a year, plus extra for compliance work if it handles federal data.

Hiring locally is costly. Systems administrators in the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria metro earned a median $125,430 in May 2025 3, against $99,130 nationally 4. With benefits at 30% of employer compensation costs 5, one hire costs about $179,200. That is before any pay premium for federal compliance experience.

Our managed IT pricing guide breaks down what is usually included at each level.

The DC business base: federal work, universities and hospitals

Federal spending shapes DC's private sector. In August 2026 the metro had 777,700 professional and business services jobs and 663,300 government jobs, about 44% of 3,299,600 total 8. HUD notes that the professional services sector is partly supported by firms doing contracted services and research for the federal government 9.

The District itself had 23,801 employer establishments in 2023, with 5,767 employing 10 to 49 people and 1,746 employing 50 to 249 6. It also had 839 establishments in computer systems design and related services 7, a category that mixes software firms and consultancies with IT support providers.

The largest private employers are universities and hospitals, including George Washington University, Georgetown University and MedStar Washington Hospital Center 9; those HUD counts date from 2016, so treat them as indicative. Associations, nonprofits, law firms and lobbying shops fill the rest of downtown. Each needs different things: contractors need documented controls, health groups need HIPAA safeguards, and associations need donor and member data protected. CMMC, DFARS and federal contract rules for DC businesses

If you hold or want Defense Department work, the rules that apply today are DFARS 252.204-7012 and NIST SP 800-171. The 7012 clause requires contractors to:

  • Implement NIST SP 800-171 on systems that handle covered defense information 12.
  • Report cyber incidents to DoD within 72 hours of discovery 12.
  • Use cloud services that meet the FedRAMP Moderate baseline or equivalent 12. Offerors also need a current NIST SP 800-171 assessment score posted in SPRS 13.

CMMC is in flux. Phase 1 self-assessments began November 10, 2025 10. On July 13, 2026 DoD suspended Phase 2, which was set for November 10, 2026, and says CMMC implementation is paused in Phase 1 10. Contracting officers may now designate only Level 1 or Level 2 self-assessments 11. No restart date has been announced, so the schedule may change.

The pause does not lower the bar. DoD says it will enforce NIST SP 800-171 compliance during the suspension 10, and the 7012 requirements remain in effect 11. Our CMMC overview and NIST SP 800-171 guide explain the controls; confirm your contract obligations with counsel or your assessor.

DC breach notification and privacy rules

The District requires breach notice to affected residents in the most expedient time possible and without unreasonable delay 15. If 50 or more DC residents are affected, the Office of the Attorney General must be notified no later than the residents are 1516. That 50-person trigger is much lower than many states' 500, so even a small incident at a DC firm can mean a regulator notice.

The District has no comprehensive consumer privacy law as of October 2026 17. Contract terms, HIPAA and federal rules do most of the work instead.

For scale: DC filed 3,113 complaints with the FBI's IC3 in 2025, with about $97.4 million in reported losses 14. The District ranked 35th in IC3's state table for losses but 44th for complaint count 14, which suggests fewer but larger losses per incident.

Cybersecurity services and IT consulting in Washington, DC

Cybersecurity services in Washington, DC fall into two groups. General offices need managed detection and response, typically $8 to $25 per endpoint per month 19, plus MFA, email security and backups. Federal contractors need all of that plus documentation: a system security plan, a SPRS score and evidence for each NIST control.

The second group often buys IT consulting in Washington, DC in project form: a gap assessment, a Microsoft GCC High migration or a policy rewrite. A part-time vCISO, published at about $1,500 to $4,000 a month for firms under 50 people 18, can own the compliance program between projects.

Firms with one internal IT person often use co-managed IT, where an outside team adds tools and coverage; see our co-managed IT guide. For the security build-out, read our cybersecurity for small business guide.

Choosing a managed service provider in Washington, DC

Choose a DC provider by what it has actually documented for clients like you. Questions to ask:

  • Have you supported a NIST SP 800-171 self-assessment and SPRS submission? Can you show a redacted system security plan?
  • Can you work in GCC High or another FedRAMP Moderate equivalent environment?
  • Who handles a 72-hour DFARS incident report, and do you have the required DoD certificate process in place?
  • Where are technicians based, and what does on-site support cost across DC, Maryland and Virginia?

Our guide to choosing an MSP covers contracts and exit terms. For offices in the region, see our pages on managed IT in Baltimore, Richmond and Philadelphia, or the managed IT services overview.

Common questions

How much do IT services cost in Washington, DC?

Most DC offices land between $100 and $250 per user monthly in published guides 1, or $30,000 to $75,000 a year at 25 users. Contractor compliance work, such as an SSP or SPRS assessment, is usually quoted on top.

Is CMMC required for DC contractors in 2026?

Only self-assessments are being required right now. DoD suspended Phase 2 on July 13, 2026 and paused CMMC in Phase 1, allowing only Level 1 or Level 2 self-assessments in contracts 1011. DFARS 252.204-7012 and NIST SP 800-171 still apply 11.

What is DFARS 252.204-7012?

It is the contract clause that requires defense contractors to protect covered defense information using NIST SP 800-171 12. It also requires reporting cyber incidents to DoD within 72 hours of discovery 12.

When must a DC business notify the Attorney General of a breach?

When 50 or more District residents are affected, the Attorney General must be notified no later than the residents are 15. Resident notice must come in the most expedient time possible 15.

What should IT consulting in Washington, DC cost?

Published rates for external IT consultants run $150 to $250 per hour 20. Fixed-price projects are common for assessments and migrations. Ask for written deliverables before work starts.

Do DC IT providers offer on-site support?

Most do, but coverage varies across DC, Maryland and Virginia. Ask where technicians are based and whether site visits are included or billed hourly.
