The in-house figure is the median salary for network and computer systems administrators (BLS OEWS May 2025 via O*NET OnLine, Nashville-Davidson--Murfreesboro--Franklin, TN: $93,170) divided by 0.70, because benefits are 30% of total compensation (BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation, June 2026). This is our calculation. Licenses, hardware and projects are extra either way, and one person cannot cover every hour.

- IT support
- Business IT support is the help desk, maintenance and troubleshooting a company needs to keep staff computers, networks, phones and cloud accounts working, delivered either by internal staff or by an outside provider.
How much managed IT services cost in Nashville
Full managed IT in Nashville generally prices at $100 to $250 per user per month in 2026 provider guides 12. A 25-person practice or office would spend roughly $2,500 to $6,250 a month, or $30,000 to $75,000 a year.
In Nashville, in-house IT pay runs below the national median: $93,170 for systems administrators against $99,130 nationally 38. That narrows the gap for firms near 75 to 100 employees, where one internal hire plus outside help can make sense. Under about 50 people, a single hire still costs more once benefits are added and leaves no backup when that person is out.
Hourly IT support without a contract runs $75 to $250 an hour in published guides 1. Our managed IT pricing guide shows what each price tier should include.
Nashville's healthcare economy and its IT demands
Healthcare has the largest economic impact in the Nashville metro 10. The Chamber lists Vanderbilt University Medical Center as the region's top employer with 28,300 staff (2021 figure), and HCA Healthcare is headquartered in the area 9. Ascension St. Thomas and Community Health Systems also rank among the 10 largest private employers 10.
Around those systems sits a long chain of smaller firms: physician groups, billing and coding companies, health IT startups, staffing agencies and consultants. Each one that touches patient data is a covered entity or business associate under HIPAA.
Davidson County had 22,122 business establishments in 2023, 5,813 of them with 10 to 49 employees and 1,583 with 50 to 249 4. In August 2026 (preliminary), education and health services employed 186,700 people in the metro, and leisure and hospitality 145,800 11, so payment card security matters for the hotel, restaurant and venue side of town too.
Technology is the newer growth story. HUD reports that Oracle plans to add 8,500 jobs and move its world headquarters to Nashville 10, and professional and business services already employed 198,300 people in the metro in August 2026 (preliminary) 11. Local software, consulting and marketing firms that sell to larger companies should expect more client security reviews as those deals grow.

Federal regulators expect every HIPAA-covered organization, large or small, to have a current, documented risk analysis. In July 2026 the HHS Office for Civil Rights settled a ransomware case for $552,250, citing failure to conduct an accurate and thorough risk analysis, and called it its 21st ransomware enforcement action 12. Small groups are not exempt: OCR settled with Northeast Surgical Group for $10,000 in 2025 13.
An update to the HIPAA Security Rule is still only a proposal. The draft would require MFA, encryption of patient data, an asset inventory and network map, and restore procedures within 72 hours 14. HHS says the current rule stays in effect while it works on the update 15.
A Nashville IT provider serving healthcare clients should sign a business associate agreement and be able to produce risk analysis evidence. See our HIPAA compliance services guide and HIPAA checklist.
Tennessee data breach and privacy rules
Tennessee businesses must notify affected residents within 45 days of discovering a breach 5. There is no Attorney General notice requirement, but consumer reporting agencies must be told if more than 1,000 people are notified at once 5. HIPAA entities have a separate federal deadline of 60 days for patient notice 16.
A Nashville staffing agency shows how the state rule works. If its payroll system exposes records on 1,500 current and former workers, each of them must get notice within 45 days 5. Because that mailing goes to more than 1,000 people at one time, the consumer reporting agencies must be told as well, but no Attorney General filing is needed 5.
The Tennessee Information Protection Act, effective July 1, 2025, applies only to businesses with more than $25 million in revenue that also handle data on at least 175,000 Tennessee consumers, or 25,000 with most revenue from selling data 17. Most local small businesses fall outside it. The Attorney General enforces it alone, with civil penalties of up to $7,500 per violation and no private right of action 22.
A 2024 state law also bars class actions over a cybersecurity event unless it was caused by willful and wanton misconduct or gross negligence; individual suits are still allowed 18. Tennessee recorded 16,261 FBI IC3 complaints and about $269 million in reported losses in 2025 19.
Cybersecurity services in Nashville
Email is the place to start. Business email compromise caused about $3.05 billion in losses reported to the FBI in 2025 19, and in Coalition's 2026 claims data, email compromise and funds transfer fraud made up 58% of incidents 20. Healthcare billing and payment flows are exposed to the same scams.
Priorities for most Nashville firms: MFA on every account, email filtering, payment verification by phone for any change in bank details, endpoint detection and response, and backups tested by restoring. Our cybersecurity guide for small business covers each control.
IT consulting, co-managed support and choosing a provider
Many Nashville firms keep one internal person and add a co-managed contract for monitoring, security tooling and after-hours coverage. One provider's 2026 estimate puts co-managed plans at $45 to $175 per user per month 21. Compare options on our co-managed IT page.
Davidson County counted 306 computer systems design and related services establishments in 2023 4, a Census category that also includes software developers and consultancies, so not every one of them offers day-to-day support. Before you sign, ask each provider: Will you sign our business associate agreement? Who comes on site and how fast? Can you show a sample risk analysis report? What does exit look like? Our guide to choosing an MSP lists more. For multi-state operators, see Louisville, Atlanta and Cincinnati, or browse the managed IT services directory.
Common questions
How much does IT support cost in Nashville?
What does Tennessee require after a data breach?
Does my Nashville medical practice need a HIPAA risk analysis?
Should a Nashville managed service provider sign a business associate agreement?
Yes, if it can access protected health information on your systems. An IT provider with admin access to email, servers or backups holding patient data is a business associate. Refusal to sign is a reason to move on.
Can a Nashville clinic rely on remote IT support?
For routine tickets, yes. Clinics with on-site servers, phones or medical devices still need someone who can come in, so ask how visits are scheduled and whether they cost extra.
Is the new HIPAA Security Rule in effect?
No. The update published in January 2025 is still a proposed rule, and HHS says the current Security Rule remains in effect 15. Many of its proposed controls, such as MFA and encryption, are already good practice.
