The in-house figure is the median salary for network and computer systems administrators (BLS OEWS May 2025 via O*NET OnLine, San Diego-Chula Vista-Carlsbad, CA: $105,170) divided by 0.70, because benefits are 30% of total compensation (BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation, June 2026). This is our calculation. Licenses, hardware and projects are extra either way, and one person cannot cover every hour.

- Managed IT services
- Managed IT services are ongoing, contracted IT operations in which a provider supports users, maintains devices and networks, and runs security and backups for a recurring fee, often with defined response commitments.
What IT support and managed IT services cost in San Diego
San Diego firms that outsource IT generally pay $100 to $250 per user per month, the range published provider guides give for small businesses 1. Defense suppliers can land at the top of that range or above it, because they need the logging, access control and documentation that NIST SP 800-171 calls for.
Local salaries set the comparison. A network and computer systems administrator in the San Diego-Chula Vista-Carlsbad metro earned a median $105,170 in May 2025, and a help desk specialist $74,020 23. Benefits were 30% of private employer compensation costs in June 2026 4, so the sysadmin costs about $150,200 a year including benefits, based on BLS data.
For a 25-person office, that single hire costs twice the high end of managed IT. Our managed IT pricing guide explains what drives quotes up or down.

Get my San Diego quoteCMMC and DFARS for San Diego defense suppliers
If your San Diego company handles Controlled Unclassified Information on a DoD contract or subcontract, the controls are already required, whatever happens to CMMC's schedule. DFARS 252.204-7012 requires contractors to implement NIST SP 800-171 on covered systems and to report cyber incidents to DoD within 72 hours of discovery 11. DFARS 252.204-7019 requires a current NIST SP 800-171 assessment, no more than three years old, posted in SPRS 12.
CMMC itself is in an unusual state. Phase 1 began November 10, 2025. On July 13, 2026, DoD suspended Phase 2, which would have added third-party (C3PAO) Level 2 certification, and says CMMC implementation is paused in Phase 1 with all self-assessment requirements still in place 910. No restart date has been announced, so treat the schedule as subject to change.
What that means for a small supplier in practice:
- Keep your System Security Plan and SPRS score current; the self-assessment is still enforced 9.
- Budget for the work, not just the paperwork. DoD's own regulatory impact analysis estimated $34,277 for a small entity to support a Level 2 self-assessment, and that excludes the cost of implementing the controls 13.
- Check whether your IT provider can work inside a CUI environment such as Microsoft's GCC High.

California rules and cybersecurity services in San Diego
State law adds its own clock for San Diego firms. Since January 1, 2026, businesses must notify affected residents within 30 calendar days of discovering a breach 14. When more than 500 Californians are notified, a sample notice goes to the Attorney General within 15 days of notifying consumers 14. The CCPA applies to for-profit businesses with more than $26,625,000 in annual gross revenue 15. It also reaches smaller firms that buy, sell or share personal information of 100,000 or more consumers or households, or that earn half their revenue from selling or sharing it 15.
California led all states in 2025 complaints to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center, with 116,414 complaints and $3.67 billion in reported losses 16. For defense suppliers, the 72-hour DoD reporting clock 11 runs alongside the state's 30-day consumer notice, so incident readiness is a core cybersecurity service here, not an add-on. See our small business cybersecurity guide for baseline controls. If an attack is happening now, call your cyber insurer's hotline if you have one, report to the FBI at ic3.gov, and preserve evidence before rebuilding systems.
IT consulting in San Diego and co-managed help
IT consulting in San Diego is often compliance-driven: a gap assessment against NIST SP 800-171, a CUI enclave design or an SPRS score review. Biotech and engineering firms with their own IT staff tend to choose co-managed IT, where a provider adds security tooling and coverage. One provider's 2026 estimate puts that at $45 to $175 per user per month 17. Our CMMC compliance services page explains the consulting side.
Choosing a managed service provider in San Diego
Choose a San Diego provider by its defense and on-site credentials, not its marketing. Ask whether it has supported clients through a NIST SP 800-171 self-assessment, whether it can work in a CUI enclave, and who handles the 72-hour DoD incident report. Confirm where technicians are based and whether they cover any offices in Orange County, Los Angeles or Las Vegas. Our MSP selection guide lists the remaining questions, and the managed IT services overview describes typical scope.
Common questions
How much does IT support cost in San Diego?
Per-user pricing of $100 to $250 a month is typical in published provider guides 1. A 25-person firm would pay about $30,000 to $75,000 a year. Defense suppliers with compliance needs may pay more.
Is CMMC certification required for San Diego defense contractors right now?
What does a San Diego defense supplier need from an IT company?
It needs help keeping a System Security Plan and SPRS score current, MFA and logging on CUI systems, and a plan to report incidents to DoD within 72 hours 11. Ask whether the provider can support a CUI enclave.
How fast must a San Diego business report a data breach?
Is it cheaper to outsource IT in San Diego than hire?
Do San Diego biotech firms need co-managed IT?
Many do, because they already employ technical staff. Co-managed IT adds security tools, monitoring and backup coverage for $45 to $175 per user per month in one provider's 2026 estimate 17.
