The in-house figure is the median salary for network and computer systems administrators (BLS OEWS May 2025 via O*NET OnLine, Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, FL: $101,560) divided by 0.70, because benefits are 30% of total compensation (BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation, June 2026). - Managed IT services
- Managed IT services are an ongoing contract in which an outside provider runs a company's day-to-day IT, including help desk, device and server management, patching, backups and basic security, for a fixed monthly fee.
What managed IT services in Tampa cost
Most Tampa businesses with 10 to 100 staff should expect to pay $100 to $250 per user per month for a fully managed plan, based on 2026 provider pricing guides 12. Plans that bundle heavier security, such as 24/7 detection and response, can reach $300 or more per user 8.
Some providers price per device instead. In Kaseya's 2023 benchmark survey the most common per-device band was $50 to $100 per device per month 9. Hourly IT support in Tampa without a contract (break-fix) is published at $75 to $250 an hour, with emergency calls at $300 or more 1.
The local wage picture explains why most firms under 50 people outsource. The Tampa metro median for a network and computer systems administrator was $101,560 in May 2025, above the national median of $99,130 310. One person also cannot cover vacations, nights and every specialty. Our managed IT pricing guide breaks down what each tier should include.
The Tampa business base and what it needs from IT
Of the 42,977 business establishments Census counted in Hillsborough County in 2023, 8,162 had 10 to 49 employees and 2,020 had 50 to 249 4. That middle band is where outsourced or co-managed IT fits best.
The same Census data counts 946 computer systems design and related services establishments in the county 4, so buyers have room to be choosy about scope and contract terms.
Three sectors shape demand here:
-
Healthcare. BayCare Health System (29,400 employees) is the region's largest employer, and the other big health systems on the top employer list are HCA Healthcare West Florida, AdventHealth West Florida, Tampa General and Moffitt Cancer Center 11. Their referral networks, clinics and billing vendors all handle patient data under HIPAA.
-
Defense. MacDill Air Force Base hosts U.S. Central Command and U.S. Special Operations Command, and nine of the top 10 U.S. defense contractors have a presence in Tampa Bay 12.
-
Finance and back office. In August 2026 (preliminary), financial activities employed 142,400 people in the metro and professional and business services 288,800 13, with Citigroup among the top 10 employers 11.

Get my Tampa quoteDefense contractors near MacDill: CMMC and DFARS
Tampa subcontractors that handle Federal Contract Information or Controlled Unclassified Information still have real obligations, even though the CMMC rollout is on hold. DoD paused CMMC in Phase 1 on July 13, 2026, and Phase 2 third-party certification, once planned for November 10, 2026, has no new start date 14.
During the pause, contracts can only call for CMMC Level 1 (Self) or Level 2 (Self), and DFARS 252.204-7012 still applies 15. DoD says it will keep enforcing NIST SP 800-171 Rev 2 self-assessments 14. The schedule may change again, so firms should keep their SPRS score current rather than wait.
Ask any provider whether it has supported a NIST SP 800-171 self-assessment before. Our CMMC overview tracks what is in force today.
Florida breach and privacy rules for Tampa businesses
Florida gives businesses 30 days to notify affected residents after determining a breach occurred 5. A breach touching 500 or more Floridians also has to be reported to the Department of Legal Affairs inside that window, and the statute requires reasonable measures to protect electronic personal information 5.
Thirty days goes fast when a forensic firm is still working out what was taken. A provider should be able to show you logs and a written incident plan that make that clock workable.
Florida's privacy statute, the Digital Bill of Rights, is aimed at the largest tech companies. It covers only firms with $1 billion or more in revenue that also pass a narrow technology test, which leaves out most local firms 16. Federal rules such as HIPAA still apply by industry.
Florida ranked third among states in 2025 for FBI IC3 complaints, with 71,843 complaints and about $1.60 billion in reported losses 17.
Cybersecurity services in Tampa: where to start
For most Tampa offices the first security dollars belong on identity, email and backups, because those are where attacks start. In Sophos's 2026 U.S. survey, phishing was the most common technical root cause of ransomware 18, and Microsoft research found multifactor authentication cut the risk of account compromise by 99.22% 19.
A sound baseline for a 10 to 100 person firm:
-
MFA on email, remote access and every admin account
-
Endpoint detection and response on every laptop and server
-
Backups kept separate from the network and tested by restoring files
-
Patching on a schedule, with old systems replaced or isolated
Insurers increasingly expect the same list before they will quote 20. Our cybersecurity guide for small business explains each control, and the cyber insurance requirements page covers what applications ask.
IT consulting, co-managed IT and choosing a Tampa provider
Firms that already have an IT person often do better with co-managed IT than with a full handoff. One provider's 2026 estimate puts co-managed plans at $45 to $175 per user per month depending on scope 21. See how co-managed IT works. For one-off projects, external IT consultants are published at $150 to $250 an hour 22; our IT consulting page covers when that model fits.
When you compare Tampa providers, ask:
-
Who comes on site, how often, and is on-site time included or billed hourly?
-
Will a healthcare client get a signed business associate agreement?
-
Has the firm supported a DFARS or NIST 800-171 client?
-
What happens to your data and passwords if you leave?

Common questions
How much does IT support cost in Tampa?
Is it cheaper to hire an IT person in Tampa or use a managed service provider?
For most firms under about 50 people, a managed service provider costs less. A 25-person office at $100 to $250 per user pays $30,000 to $75,000 a year, while one sysadmin costs about $145,100 with benefits by our calculation from BLS data 37. Larger firms often keep one internal person and add co-managed support.
Do Tampa defense subcontractors need CMMC certification right now?
What does Florida require after a data breach?
Do I need a local IT company in Tampa or is remote support enough?
Remote support handles most day-to-day tickets, but a firm with servers, network gear or clinical equipment on site benefits from someone who can be in the office. Ask each provider how on-site visits are scheduled and billed. With 946 IT services establishments in Hillsborough County 4, local coverage is easy to require.
