Plan prices are one provider's published 2026 tiers (Strategic Micro Systems, Managed IT Services Cost Per User: A 2026 Pricing Guide). The in-house figure is the median salary for network and computer systems administrators (BLS OEWS May 2025 via O*NET OnLine, New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ: $119,390) divided by 0.70, because benefits are 30% of total compensation (BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation, June 2026). This is our calculation. Licenses, hardware and projects are extra either way, and one person cannot cover every hour.

New York breach notice rule: notify affected residents within 30 days. The Attorney General, the Department of State and the State Police (plus the Department of Financial Services for DFS-regulated businesses) must also be notified of any breach. The full rule and statute link are in our New York data breach notification law summary.

Managed IT services
Managed IT services are an outsourced model in which a provider supports a business's users, devices, network and cloud services, and keeps them secure and backed up, under a monthly agreement with an agreed scope.

IT services and managed IT costs on Long Island

Long Island businesses buying managed IT generally see quotes between $100 and $250 per user per month, the range published provider guides give for small businesses 1. Hourly break-fix work runs $75 to $250, more for emergencies 1.

The wage comparison needs a caveat. Federal wage tables used here do not break out the Nassau-Suffolk division, so the figures are for the whole New York-Newark-Jersey City metro, which includes Manhattan and likely overstates Long Island pay. In that metro a network and computer systems administrator earned a median $119,390 in May 2025, and a help desk specialist $75,690 23. Benefits were 30% of private employer compensation in June 2026 4, so the sysadmin figure becomes about $170,600 a year including benefits, based on BLS data.

Even if Long Island pay runs well below that, one loaded hire still costs far more than managed IT for 25 users at $30,000 to $75,000 a year. Our managed IT pricing guide shows how providers build their quotes.

Long Island's business base and the IT it needs

Nassau and Suffolk counties together had 99,466 business establishments in 2023: 48,718 in Nassau and 50,748 in Suffolk 56. Of those, 16,825 had 10 to 49 employees and 3,189 had 50 to 249 56. The two counties also had 1,475 establishments in computer systems design and related services, 808 in Nassau and 667 in Suffolk 78, a category that covers MSPs, software firms and IT consultancies alike.

Healthcare dominates. HUD names Northwell Health as Long Island's largest employer with 60,000 employees, followed by Henry Schein and Altice USA, and says education and health services make up more than 21% of nonfarm payrolls 9. In August 2026 the Nassau-Suffolk division had 320,800 education and health services jobs, 249,600 trade, transportation and utilities jobs, 188,400 professional and business services jobs and 67,800 manufacturing jobs, out of 1,389,500 nonfarm jobs (preliminary) 10.

In practice, Long Island IT buyers tend to be:

  • Medical, dental and specialty practices and the billing, lab and supply firms that serve them.
  • Professional offices, including law, accounting, insurance and real estate firms, many with offices in the city too.
  • Distributors and manufacturers that need reliable warehouse and order systems.

Our healthcare IT guide covers practice-specific needs.

New York rules: the SHIELD Act, breach notice and NYDFS

New York has no comprehensive consumer privacy law as of October 2026 13, but it imposes something that matters more day to day: a security duty. The SHIELD Act requires any business holding computerized private information of New York residents to develop, implement and maintain reasonable safeguards for its security, confidentiality and integrity, including secure disposal 11. Small businesses may scale those safeguards to their size 11. The law defines them as having fewer than 50 employees, under $3 million in gross annual revenue in each of the last three fiscal years, or under $5 million in year-end assets 11. Scaled is not the same as exempt.

New York's breach statute requires notice to affected residents without unreasonable delay and no later than 30 days after discovery 12. The business must also notify the Attorney General, the Department of State and the Division of State Police about the timing, content and distribution of the notices 12. If more than 5,000 New Yorkers are notified at once, consumer reporting agencies must be told too 12.

Long Island insurance agencies, lenders and other businesses licensed by the Department of Financial Services also follow 23 NYCRR Part 500 14. Its final amended requirements took effect November 1, 2025, including multi-factor authentication for all users and a written asset inventory 14. Smaller licensees that qualify for the limited exemption have narrower duties but must still use MFA for remote access and privileged accounts 20. Medical practices add HIPAA's 60-day breach notice 16. Check the details with counsel.

Cybersecurity companies and services on Long Island

Long Island firms can buy cybersecurity services from a separate security company or through their managed IT provider, and either should document a short list of controls with evidence that they run. That record is also a practical way to meet the SHIELD Act's reasonable-safeguards duty:

  • MFA, which Microsoft research found reduces the risk of account compromise by 99.22% 17.
  • Patching.
  • Endpoint detection and response.
  • Encrypted, tested backups.
  • Secure disposal of old drives.

Ask for monthly reports that show each control working. New Yorkers filed 45,255 complaints with the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center in 2025 and reported $1.23 billion in losses, fourth among states on both counts 15. Those are complaints, not unique victims. Our small business cybersecurity guide and HIPAA compliance services guide give more detail. If a breach is in progress, start with your cyber insurer's hotline (if you have a policy) and a report to the FBI at ic3.gov. Do not rebuild systems before evidence is preserved.

IT consulting and co-managed IT on Long Island

Larger practices and distributors with an internal IT lead often add co-managed support, budgeted at $45 to $175 per user per month in one provider's 2026 estimate 18. Our co-managed IT guide explains the setup. For planning, a virtual CIO costs $2,000 to $10,000 a month in published rates, and some MSPs include the role in their plans 19; our IT consulting page explains when to buy one.

Choosing an IT provider on Long Island

Long Island is long, so ask where technicians are based and whether visits to the East End cost extra. If you also have staff in New York City, New Jersey or Providence, ask how those are covered. Ask how the provider documents SHIELD Act safeguards and who drafts breach notices to New York agencies. Our how to choose an MSP guide has more questions to ask, and the managed IT services overview explains what a contract usually covers.

Common questions

How much do IT services cost on Long Island?

On Long Island, as elsewhere, published provider guides put managed IT at $100 to $250 a user each month 1. Twenty-five people would run $30,000 to $75,000 a year. Break-fix rates typically run $75 to $250 an hour 1.

Does the NY SHIELD Act apply to small Long Island businesses?

Yes. Any business holding New York residents' computerized private information must maintain reasonable safeguards 11. Businesses under 50 employees or below the revenue or asset limits may scale those safeguards to their size, but they are not exempt 11.

What is the data breach notification deadline in New York?

No later than 30 days after discovery for affected residents 12. The Attorney General, Department of State and State Police must also be notified 12.

What does an in-house IT person cost on Long Island?

Our wage source does not break out Long Island separately; the New York metro median for systems administrators was $119,390 in May 2025 2. That is about $170,600 with benefits, based on BLS data 4, and likely runs high for Nassau and Suffolk because it includes Manhattan.

Do Long Island insurance agencies need extra cybersecurity?

Often, yes. DFS-licensed businesses must follow 23 NYCRR Part 500, which as of November 1, 2025 requires MFA for all users and a written asset inventory 14. Smaller agencies that qualify for the limited exemption have a narrower MFA duty 20. Ask your provider to map its services to those requirements.

Should I hire a Long Island cybersecurity company or use my MSP?

Most small firms get core protection through their managed IT provider. A separate cybersecurity company is useful for penetration tests, incident response or a formal NYDFS or HIPAA risk assessment.
