Plan prices are one provider's published 2026 tiers (Strategic Micro Systems, Managed IT Services Cost Per User: A 2026 Pricing Guide). The in-house figure is the median salary for network and computer systems administrators (BLS OEWS May 2025 via O*NET OnLine, St. Louis, MO-IL: $88,940) divided by 0.70, because benefits are 30% of total compensation (BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation, June 2026). This is our calculation. Licenses, hardware and projects are extra either way, and one person cannot cover every hour.

Missouri breach notice rule: notify affected residents without unreasonable delay, with no fixed number of days. The Attorney General must also be notified when a breach involves more than 1,000 residents. The full rule and statute link are in our Missouri data breach notification law summary.

Managed service provider
A managed service provider (MSP) is an outside company that runs a business's day-to-day IT, including help desk, device management, updates, backups and security monitoring, under an ongoing monthly agreement.

Managed IT services in St. Louis: what you will pay

The common quote for managed IT in St. Louis falls between $100 and $250 per user per month, the band in current published pricing guides 12. Quotes below that often leave out security tools or after-hours help; quotes above it usually bundle advanced security or a dedicated strategy lead.

Survey data is older but consistent. Kaseya's 2023 benchmark found the single most common per-device band was $50 to $100 a month, used by 28% of providers 8, and Syncro's 2023 report put the average at $151 per user 9.

The local labor market sets the comparison. St. Louis area pay for network and computer systems administrators has a median of $88,940, and for computer user support specialists $60,940 36. Benefits make up 30% of private-industry compensation 7, which takes those roles to about $127,100 and $87,100 a year (our calculation). A 25-person firm pays $30,000 to $75,000 a year for a managed plan, less than either hire, and gets a team instead of one person. See what drives managed IT pricing for the details behind a quote.

The St. Louis business base: city and county together

St. Louis city and St. Louis County are separate jurisdictions, so we add them. Together they held 38,185 business establishments in 2023: 8,468 in the city and 29,717 in the county 1011. Of those, 9,201 had 10 to 49 employees and 2,357 had 50 to 249 1011. Those 11,558 midsize locations are the businesses most likely to outsource IT.

The same Census data counts 678 establishments in computer systems design and related services across the two jurisdictions, 154 in the city and 524 in the county 412. Most sit in the county, which matters if you want a provider that can reach a city office quickly or the reverse.

Metro employment adds context. In August 2026 the St. Louis MO-IL metro had 1,426,900 nonfarm jobs, with 280,000 in education and health services, 212,800 in professional and business services, 118,200 in manufacturing and 92,100 in financial activities 13. Health and education alone are about one in five jobs.

Each group brings a different IT need:

  • Health care practices and their vendors need HIPAA safeguards and signed business associate agreements, as our HIPAA compliance services guide explains.
  • Tax preparers, mortgage brokers and other non-bank financial firms answer to the FTC Safeguards Rule 14. It requires MFA and encryption of customer data, plus a written risk assessment for firms holding data on 5,000 or more consumers 14.
  • Manufacturers need networks segmented so an infected office PC cannot reach production equipment.

Missouri and Illinois rules that reach St. Louis firms

Under Missouri law, a business that loses control of Missouri residents' personal information must tell them without unreasonable delay 15. A notice that goes out to more than 1,000 consumers in one batch must also be reported to the Missouri Attorney General and to the national credit bureaus 1516.

Missouri had passed no broad consumer privacy statute by October 2026 1718, so most small firms here answer to the breach statute plus whatever federal or contract rules their industry carries.

The metro crosses the river into Illinois, and breach laws follow the residence of the affected people. A Missouri firm with Illinois employees or customers should ask counsel whether Illinois rules apply too.

The fraud pressure is real. Missouri residents filed 14,087 complaints with the FBI's IC3 in 2025 and reported $233.9 million in losses 5. Across the country, business email compromise accounted for about $3.05 billion of reported losses 5, usually through a forged invoice or a changed payment instruction.

Cybersecurity services and IT support in St. Louis

Start with controls that stop account takeover. Microsoft research found MFA reduced account compromise risk by 99.22% 19, and CISA tells small firms to enforce MFA technically, remove admin rights from laptops and regularly test restores 20.

Next come endpoint detection and response and email filtering. Mainstream managed detection and response costs $8 to $25 a month for each endpoint 21. If you carry cyber insurance, expect your insurer to ask about these controls by name 22; small businesses buying through Insureon pay a median of $129 a month for coverage 23.

A St. Louis cybersecurity company can run these as a standalone service, or your MSP can include them. Our small business cybersecurity guide ranks what to buy first.

Co-managed IT and IT consulting in St. Louis

If you already have an IT manager, co-managed support adds coverage without replacing that person. Scope sets the price: one provider's 2026 estimate spans $45 to $175 per user per month 24. Read how co-managed IT works before you define the split.

For a one-time job such as a server retirement or a Microsoft 365 move, an external consultant typically bills $150 to $250 an hour 25.

Choosing a managed service provider in St. Louis

Ask each St. Louis provider where its technicians start their day, whether it covers both city and county sites, and what an on-site visit costs outside the plan. Ask for a sample monthly report and a written offboarding process.

Our MSP selection guide lists the rest. For offices elsewhere, compare Kansas City managed IT, Indianapolis and Louisville, or return to the managed IT services overview.

At a minimum, MFA, endpoint detection and response, email security, patching and tested backups, which are the controls insurers ask about 22. Ask whether alerts are watched around the clock.

Is IT support in St. Louis billed hourly or monthly?
