Plan prices are one provider's published 2026 tiers (Strategic Micro Systems, Managed IT Services Cost Per User: A 2026 Pricing Guide). The in-house figure is the median salary for network and computer systems administrators (BLS OEWS May 2025 via O*NET OnLine, New Jersey (statewide): $116,420) divided by 0.70, because benefits are 30% of total compensation (BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation, June 2026). This is our calculation. Licenses, hardware and projects are extra either way, and one person cannot cover every hour.

New Jersey breach notice rule: notify affected residents without unreasonable delay, with no fixed number of days. The Division of State Police must also be notified of any breach. The full rule and statute link are in our New Jersey data breach notification law summary.

Managed IT services
Managed IT services are ongoing IT management purchased from an outside firm on a monthly contract, covering user support, systems upkeep, data backup and security monitoring instead of paying per repair.

What managed IT services cost in New Jersey

Most New Jersey offices that outsource should expect $100 to $250 per user per month, the range published pricing guides show 1, with fully security-loaded plans at $300 or more 2. A 25-person firm should plan on $30,000 to $75,000 a year.

The in-house comparison favors outsourcing for most small firms. New Jersey's statewide median for systems administrators was $116,420 in May 2025 3, well above the national $99,130 4. Benefits make up 30% of employer compensation costs 5, so one hire runs about $166,300. That buys one person with no backup.

New Jersey's business base and its IT support needs

New Jersey had 237,968 employer establishments statewide in 2023, including 49,002 with 10 to 49 employees and 11,121 with 50 to 249 6. That is the market IT support in New Jersey mostly serves: established firms with real payrolls and no IT department.

The state's largest sectors in August 2026 were trade, transportation and utilities at 891,200 jobs, education and health services at 824,300 and professional and business services at 699,700, with 266,700 in financial activities 8. Ports, warehouses and distributors need networks and scanners that stay up through every shift. Pharmaceutical and health employers need controlled access to regulated data; Merck, Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences and RWJBarnabas Health are among the large employers in the Newark area 9.

Defense work matters too. Picatinny Arsenal, a federal employer, has about 6,000 workers in the Newark area 9. Companies that supply defense programs face DFARS 252.204-7012, which requires NIST SP 800-171 on systems holding covered defense information 15. DoD paused CMMC in Phase 1 on July 13, 2026 and has given no date for Phase 2 16, so self-assessment rules apply for now and the schedule may change. Our CMMC overview tracks the current status.

New Jersey also had 6,369 establishments in computer systems design and related services 7, though many of those are software and consulting firms rather than support providers.

New Jersey privacy law and the State Police breach notice

New Jersey's breach statute has an unusual order of operations. A business must report a breach to the Division of State Police in the Department of Law and Public Safety before notifying affected customers, and there is no minimum number of people 10. Customer notice must then follow in the most expedient time possible and without unreasonable delay 10. If more than 1,000 people are notified at once, consumer reporting agencies must also be told 10.

That sequence means your incident plan needs a named person who files with the State Police on day one. Many generic incident plans skip this step.

Picture a New Jersey distributor that finds a ransom note on a Friday night and learns customer files were copied. The first filing goes to the State Police, before any customer letter, however few people are involved 10. If the files cover more than 1,000 people, the consumer reporting agencies are added 10. Because the police report comes first, the logs and affected machines need to stay intact from the first hour, so the provider should image systems before it wipes or rebuilds anything.

New Jersey also has a comprehensive privacy law. The New Jersey Data Privacy Act took effect in January 2025 1112. It covers businesses that handle personal data of at least 100,000 New Jersey consumers a year, not counting data processed only to complete a payment 11. It also covers businesses with at least 25,000 consumers that earn any revenue or discount from selling personal data 11. Note the second test: any revenue from selling data, not a share. If you are close to either line, ask counsel.

New Jersey ranked fifth among states for reported internet crime losses in 2025, at about $660.4 million on 20,648 complaints 13.

Cybersecurity services and cybersecurity companies in New Jersey

New Jersey's loss figures argue for buying security along with support. The core package for most offices is MFA, managed detection and response, email filtering, tested backups and phishing training. MDR alone is commonly $8 to $25 a month per endpoint 14.

Business email compromise drives many large losses: it accounted for about $3.05 billion in reported US losses in 2025 13. Payment verification by phone, MFA on email and alerts on mailbox rule changes cut that risk sharply.

Firms holding personal data under the privacy law, or defense data under DFARS, often add a part-time security lead. Our cybersecurity for small business guide and managed security services page explain the options.

Co-managed IT and IT consulting across New Jersey

Many New Jersey companies keep one internal IT person and add an outside team for monitoring, security tools and after-hours coverage. Co-managed contracts cost $45 to $175 per user a month in one provider's published estimate, with price tied to scope 18. Our co-managed IT guide shows how the duties split.

Project work, such as a privacy-law data map, a network rebuild or a cloud move, is often billed by the hour, and a 2026 guide lists outside consultants at $150 to $250 an hour 19.

Choosing a managed service provider in New Jersey

New Jersey is spread out, so on-site coverage is the first thing to check. Ask each provider:

  • Which counties do your technicians cover, and how fast can they reach us?
  • Does your incident plan include the State Police filing before customer notice?
  • Can you document where personal data lives for the New Jersey Data Privacy Act?
  • If we do defense work, have you supported a NIST SP 800-171 self-assessment?

Our guide to choosing an MSP adds contract and exit questions. For nearby markets, see managed IT in New York, Philadelphia and Long Island, or the managed IT services overview.

Common questions

How much do IT services cost in New Jersey?

New Jersey businesses on a managed contract usually pay $100 to $250 monthly for each user, according to published pricing guides 1. A 25-user firm spends about $30,000 to $75,000 a year. Pay-as-you-go repairs run $75 to $250 an hour 1.

Who do you notify first after a data breach in New Jersey?

The Division of State Police, before notifying customers 10. Customer notice must then follow without unreasonable delay. Credit bureaus are added when more than 1,000 people are notified at once 10.

Does the New Jersey Data Privacy Act apply to small businesses?

It applies by volume, not size: 100,000 or more New Jersey consumers a year, or 25,000 or more plus any revenue or discount from selling personal data 11. There is no separate small-business exemption 12. Ask counsel if you are near the line.

Is IT support in New Jersey available on site?

Most providers offer site visits, but coverage varies by region. Ask which counties a provider serves and whether visits are included or billed hourly.

How do I compare cybersecurity companies in New Jersey?

Compare what is monitored, who responds after hours and what an incident costs beyond the retainer. Mainstream MDR is quoted at $8 to $25 per endpoint each month 14; ask to see what a monthly report looks like.
