IT Support for Startups

IT support for startups usually means a cloud-first setup with managed laptops, single sign-on and MFA rather than servers, and a small team can buy the core tools for little: Microsoft 365 Business Premium lists at $22 per user per month and EDR at $3 to $20 per endpoint 12. Fully managed IT, when you need it, runs $100 to $250 per user per month in published provider guides 34.

IT support for startups
IT support for startups is outsourced help with setting up and running a young company's cloud accounts, laptops, identity and security controls, sized to grow with headcount and to pass the security reviews that larger customers and investors ask for.

What IT support for startups looks like

Most startups do not need an office server, a phone system or a full-time IT person. They need a clean cloud setup on day one, laptops that are managed from the moment they ship, and someone who can answer a customer's security questionnaire without guessing. IT services for startups are usually built around those three jobs.

A typical starting scope:

  • Set up the email and productivity suite, single sign-on and MFA.
  • Enroll every laptop in device management so it can be configured, encrypted and wiped remotely.
  • Automate onboarding and offboarding so access is granted and removed in minutes.
  • Install endpoint protection and turn on logging.
  • Back up email, files and key SaaS data.
  • Provide help desk for the team, often by chat.

How you buy it depends on stage. Very early teams often use a part-time consultant or a fixed-fee setup project. Once you pass roughly 20 people, or sign customers who send security reviews, a managed provider usually costs less than a hire. Typical published ranges for fully managed IT are $100 to $250 per user per month 34, while the median salary for a computer user support specialist was $61,860 in May 2025 before benefits 9. Our managed IT pricing guide compares models.

A cloud-first setup that scales

Get identity right first, because everything else hangs off it. Pick one identity provider (usually your Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace tenant), connect every SaaS app to it with single sign-on where the plan allows, and require MFA. In a Microsoft study of Azure AD accounts, MFA cut the risk of compromise by 99.22% 10.

Choosing the suite tier matters more than it looks. Microsoft 365 Business Basic lists at $7 per user per month and Business Premium at $22, paid yearly, at current list prices 111. Premium bundles device management and security features that a startup would otherwise buy separately, so compare it against a cheaper tier plus add-ons before deciding.

Other early decisions that are expensive to undo:

  • Company-owned accounts. Every SaaS tool should be registered to a company address, not a founder's personal email.
  • Admin separation. Founders should use a normal account day to day and a separate admin account with stronger protection.
  • Shared drives over personal folders, so files survive when someone leaves.
  • Backups of SaaS data. Cloud vendors keep the service running but do not promise to restore what your team deletes. Third-party Microsoft 365 backup starts around $2 to $3 per user per month at list 12.

Device management for remote and hybrid teams

Every company laptop should be enrolled in mobile device management (MDM) before it reaches the employee. With MDM the company can push settings, require disk encryption and screen locks, install security software, keep the operating system updated and wipe the device remotely if it is lost or the person leaves.

What a good setup includes:

  • Zero-touch enrollment, so a laptop shipped straight from the vendor configures itself on first login.
  • Encryption and screen-lock policies enforced, not just recommended.
  • Endpoint detection and response on every machine. EDR tools list at $3 to $20 per endpoint per month 2; Microsoft Defender for Business lists at $3 per user per month 13.
  • Automatic patching with a deadline, so updates cannot be postponed forever.
  • An offboarding script that disables the account, transfers files, revokes SaaS sessions and locks the device on the employee's last day.

Staffing and marketing agencies have an extra wrinkle: contractors and freelancers who need access to some client systems but not others. Give them company-managed accounts with limited access and an end date, instead of shared passwords. Agencies also hold client logins for ad platforms and websites, which belong in a password manager with access logs.

Customer security questionnaires and SOC 2 pressure

For a B2B startup, the first serious IT requirement often arrives from a customer, not a regulator. Enterprise buyers send security questionnaires because their own breaches increasingly start with vendors: the 2026 Verizon DBIR found third-party involvement in 48% of breaches 6.

Questionnaires mostly ask whether the same basic controls exist:

  • MFA and single sign-on for all staff.
  • Encrypted, managed laptops with EDR.
  • Access reviews and prompt offboarding.
  • Logging, backups and a tested restore.
  • A written incident response plan.
  • Vendor management for your own subprocessors.
  • A recent penetration test of your application. Published 2026 guides put simple web application tests at roughly $3,500 to $9,000 and broader ones at $5,000 to $30,000 1415.

Answer truthfully. Overstating controls on a questionnaire, a contract or an insurance application creates liability; in Travelers v. International Control Services, the insurer sought to rescind a policy over an alleged MFA misstatement 16. Many startups eventually pursue a formal audit report or certification when a large customer asks for one. Build the controls above first and the audit becomes evidence collection rather than a rebuild. Our penetration testing guide explains scoping.

When to bring in a vCISO

Bring in a virtual CISO when security questions start affecting revenue or fundraising, not before. Common triggers are a large customer's security review you cannot answer, a request for a formal audit, a cyber insurance application with questions nobody owns, or entry into a regulated market such as healthcare or financial services.

Published vCISO retainers run about $1,500 to $4,000 a month for companies with 1 to 50 employees and $3,000 to $7,000 for 50 to 200, with hourly advisory at $200 to $400 5. A full-time information security analyst's median wage was $129,180 in May 2025 17, before benefits, so a part-time leader is usually the right fit until the company is much larger.

A good vCISO for a startup should:

  • Own the security questionnaire library and keep answers consistent.
  • Write the policies a customer or auditor will ask for.
  • Prioritize spending, including saying no to tools you do not need yet.
  • Run a tabletop exercise of your incident response plan.

Our vCISO services guide covers scope and contracts in more detail.

How startups avoid overbuying IT

The most common mistake is buying a mid-market security stack for a 15-person company. Spend in order of risk reduced per dollar, and revisit when headcount or customer demands change.

A good order to buy in:

  1. Identity, SSO and MFA, plus company ownership of every account.
  2. MDM, disk encryption and EDR on every laptop.
  3. Backups of email, files and critical SaaS data.
  4. Security awareness training, listed at about $2.40 to $3.75 per seat per month for small teams 7.
  5. Managed detection and response once you have something worth watching at night. Expect $8 to $25 per endpoint per month for mainstream MDR 8.
  6. A vCISO and penetration testing when customers or investors require them.

What most startups can skip early: an on-site server, a 24/7 security operations center retainer (mid-market SOC retainers run $5,000 to $25,000 a month 8), and a long contract. Ask any provider for a term you can exit as you grow. An MSP Success survey found one-year agreements were the most commonly offered term, with month-to-month offered by 38% of respondents 18.

Common questions

Does a startup need an IT company?

Not on day one. A founder or a part-time consultant can set up a cloud suite, MFA and device management for a small team. Once you pass roughly 20 people or start receiving customer security reviews, a managed provider is usually cheaper than a hire.

How much does IT support for startups cost?

Core tools are inexpensive: Microsoft 365 Business Premium lists at $22 per user per month and EDR at $3 to $20 per endpoint 12. Fully managed IT runs $100 to $250 per user per month in published provider guides 34. A one-time setup project is often priced separately.

What cybersecurity does a startup need first?

MFA and single sign-on on every account, managed and encrypted laptops with EDR, and backups of your cloud data. Add training, monitoring and testing as you grow.

When should a startup hire a vCISO?

When security starts blocking sales, fundraising or insurance, typically after a large customer sends a security questionnaire or asks for an audit report. Published retainers for companies under 50 employees run about $1,500 to $4,000 a month 5.

What IT services do staffing agencies need?

Staffing agencies hold large volumes of candidate personal data, so they need MFA, encrypted laptops, a secure applicant tracking system with access controls, and a fast offboarding process for recruiters. Business email compromise is a major risk for any firm that pays contractors; the FBI recorded about $3.05 billion in BEC losses in 2025 19.

What IT services do marketing agencies need?

Marketing agencies need managed laptops, a password manager for the client ad and website logins they hold, limited and time-bound access for freelancers, and backups of creative files. Large file storage and fast internet matter more than servers. Clients increasingly send agencies security questionnaires as well.
