The in-house figure is the median salary for network and computer systems administrators (BLS OEWS May 2025 via O*NET OnLine, Omaha, NE-IA: $89,090) divided by 0.70, because benefits are 30% of total compensation (BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation, June 2026). - Managed IT services
- Managed IT services are outsourced, ongoing management of a company's technology, such as user support, devices, servers, networks, backups and security, billed as a predictable monthly fee.
What managed IT services cost in Omaha
Omaha businesses can plan on $100 to $250 per user per month for fully managed IT, based on 2026 provider guides 12. Hourly support without a contract runs $75 to $250 an hour 1.
In-house IT costs less here than in many large metros. The Omaha median for systems administrators was $89,090 in May 2025, about $10,000 below the national $99,130 38. Help desk specialists earned $60,870 6. Even so, one admin with benefits runs about $127,300 a year by our calculation 7, more than full managed IT for a 25-person office at the top of the range.
The crossover point comes sooner in Omaha than on the coasts, so firms with 60 to 100 staff should price both options, and often a mix of the two. Our managed IT pricing guide shows what each tier covers.
Omaha's employers: STRATCOM, finance and healthcare
Offutt Air Force Base, home of U.S. Strategic Command and the 55th Wing, is Omaha's largest employer, with more than 6,000 military personnel and almost 4,000 civilian employees 5. HUD counts 10,475 including military 9, and the base reported a $2.6 billion local economic impact in fiscal 2021 5.
Finance and insurance give Omaha its other identity. Fiserv, Mutual of Omaha and First National Bank of Omaha each employ 2,500 to 4,999 people 9, and financial activities accounted for 39,700 metro jobs in August 2026 (preliminary) 10. Healthcare is the other anchor: CHI Health, Nebraska Medical Center and Methodist Health System are three of the four largest employers 9. BLS counted 94,700 education and health services jobs in the metro in August 2026 (preliminary), and 92,900 in trade, transportation and utilities 10.
Douglas County had 16,710 establishments in 2023, including 4,028 with 10 to 49 employees and 970 with 50 to 249, plus 271 computer systems design and related services establishments 4. That Census category also includes software developers and consultancies, so the pool of firms offering day-to-day support is smaller still. Start comparing early.

Contractors supporting Offutt still have to protect contract data while CMMC certification is paused. DoD paused CMMC in Phase 1 on July 13, 2026, with no new start date for Phase 2 third-party assessments 11.
DFARS 252.204-7012 remains in force, only Level 1 or Level 2 self-assessments may be required in contracts during the pause, and DoD says it will enforce NIST SP 800-171 Rev 2 1211. Dates could shift again after DoD's review. Our CMMC guide and CMMC compliance services page explain the options.
Nebraska privacy, breach and liability rules
Nebraska requires breach notice to affected residents as soon as possible and without unreasonable delay, and the Attorney General must be notified no later than residents are, with no minimum number 13. Even a breach affecting one Nebraskan triggers AG notice.
The practical effect: an Omaha insurance agency that finds an employee's mailbox was opened by an attacker, exposing a few dozen policyholders' records, must notify the Attorney General at the same time it notifies those customers 13. That makes it worth having the AG notice template, the facts it needs and the person who signs it settled in your incident plan before anything happens.
The Nebraska Data Privacy Act took effect January 1, 2025. It has no consumer-count threshold but exempts businesses that are small under the federal Small Business Act, except for limits on selling sensitive data 14. Larger Omaha firms in insurance, payments and retail should confirm whether they are covered.
A 2025 law, LB 241, bars class actions over cybersecurity events unless the event was caused by willful, wanton or grossly negligent conduct; individual suits and regulatory action are still possible 15. Nebraska logged 3,724 FBI IC3 complaints in 2025, with about $72 million in reported losses 16.
Finance-adjacent firms such as mortgage brokers, lenders and tax preparers also fall under the FTC Safeguards Rule 1718. It requires a named qualified individual to run the security program and, for firms holding data on 5,000 or more consumers, a written risk assessment 17. Covered firms must also report to the FTC within 30 days when a breach involves at least 500 consumers 17. See financial services IT.
Cybersecurity services for Omaha businesses
Omaha's finance and insurance ecosystem makes payment fraud the risk to plan for first. Coalition's 2026 claims report attributes 58% of its incidents to email compromise and funds transfer fraud combined 19.
Controls that address it: MFA on email and banking, which Microsoft research found cut account compromise risk by 99.22% 20; email filtering; a call-back rule for payment changes; and endpoint detection and response. Add tested backups for ransomware. Our cybersecurity for small business guide explains each.
Co-managed IT, consulting and choosing an Omaha provider
Because local IT salaries are moderate, many Omaha firms keep an internal admin and add a provider for security and depth. Co-managed IT is priced at $45 to $175 per user per month in one provider's 2026 guide 21. Compare co-managed IT with project-based IT consulting.
Ask each Omaha provider:
-
Have you supported FTC Safeguards or DFARS clients?
-
How is on-site work handled across the metro, including Council Bluffs and the Bellevue area near Offutt?
-
Can you serve as, or support, the qualified individual our Safeguards program needs?
-
How do you document our security program?
-
What happens to our data if we leave? Contract red flags are listed in our guide to choosing an MSP. Compare regional markets in Kansas City, Minneapolis and St. Louis, or see the managed IT services directory.
Common questions
What do IT services cost an Omaha business?
Is it cheaper to hire an IT person in Omaha than to outsource?
What does Nebraska require after a data breach?
Nebraska requires notice to affected residents as soon as possible and without unreasonable delay, and notice to the Attorney General no later than residents are told 13. There is no minimum number of residents for AG notice.
Does the Nebraska Data Privacy Act apply to small businesses?
Mostly not. Businesses that are small under the federal Small Business Act are exempt, except for limits on selling sensitive data 14. Counsel can tell you whether your firm counts as small.
Should I hire a local IT company in Omaha?
Local presence helps if you have on-site equipment. Most problems are solved remotely, yet a failed server or switch still needs someone in the building. Ask how far each provider will travel and whether visits cost extra.
