Managed IT price index
A managed IT price index is a side-by-side list of the prices that IT providers, vendors, insurers and government sources publish for business IT and security services, each with its unit, scope, date and source.

What managed IT costs, by the published numbers

Fully managed IT is most often published at $100 to $250 per user per month in 2026 guides 35. Across the eight sources we found, the spread runs from a $50 to $100 band in Kaseya's 2023 survey of MSPs 1 to $400 at the top of one provider's range, for fully hosted or cloud packages 2. Entry tiers start around $100 per user: one provider's basic tier begins at $100 4 and another's at $102 6.

The spread is mostly scope, not markup. The low end usually covers help desk, monitoring and patching. The high end adds 24/7 security monitoring, backup, compliance support and on-site visits. Before you compare two quotes, line them up against the same list: our managed IT pricing guide has one, and the managed IT services guide explains what each piece is.

Per-device pricing is the older model. Kaseya's 2023 survey found $50 to $100 per device per month was the most common band 1. Current provider guides list workstations at $45 to $150 a month and bill servers separately at higher rates (see the per-device sources below).

Why published prices differ so much

Four things explain most of the gaps in this index.

  • Unit. Help desk is priced per ticket in some guides ($6 to $40 or $25 to $45) and per user in others ($25 to $110 per month) 91011. Comparing a per-ticket price with a per-user price tells you nothing.
  • Scope. A $5,000 to $25,000 monthly SOC retainer for a company with 100 to 1,000 employees 8 and a $1,000 to $10,000 retainer that scales with log volume and user count 12 are different products.
  • Who is selling. vCIO services from an MSP are published at $2,000 to $10,000 a month 13. Consulting and leadership firms that sell enterprise or fractional CIO services publish $5,000 to $25,000 1415. Both are called a virtual CIO.
  • Age of the data. The newest named MSP survey with per-user price bands that we found is from 2023 1. Everything newer comes from providers' own guides, which is why we never call any of these numbers an industry average.

Every row in the source tables says what the figure covers. Figures in a different unit or for a different scope are listed but kept out of the charts and the low and high columns.

Security services: MDR, SOC, pen testing and vCISO

Security prices are easier to compare because the units are more consistent.

  • MDR: published prices for mainstream endpoint MDR start around $8 to $10 per endpoint per month, and one security firm puts the typical range at $8 to $25 8. Huntress lists its managed EDR at $8.99 per endpoint 16. Coverage that adds network, cloud and identity monitoring is published at $25 to $50 per endpoint, and one vendor-price index tops out at $75 2517. See our MDR guide.
  • Penetration testing: an external network test starts around $4,000 to $5,000, and published ranges run to $12,000 to $30,000 depending on the number of IP addresses 18192024. Internal network tests run higher, to $35,000 to $40,000 1820. Our penetration testing guide covers scoping.
  • vCISO: published monthly retainers for companies with up to 50 employees run $1,500 to $4,000, and ranges for larger organizations reach $20,000 21. See the vCISO guide.
  • SOC and managed SIEM: most small businesses buy MDR per endpoint instead. Full SOC retainers are a mid-market purchase 8, covered in our SOC as a service guide.

In-house IT and cyber insurance, for comparison

The median pay for a network and computer systems administrator was $99,130 in May 2025, with the lowest 10 percent under $62,640 and the highest 10 percent over $155,050 7. Benefits make up about 30 percent of total compensation for private industry workers 26, and one person cannot cover nights, vacations and every skill. Our outsourced IT vs in-house guide works through the math.

Cyber insurance premiums depend heavily on the coverage limit. Insureon reports its small business customers pay $1,552 a year, or $129 a month, for cyber coverage with limits that are typically $1 million to $5 million 22. Hiscox's published example quotes for a $250,000 limit run $323 to $407 a year 23. Our cyber insurance requirements guide covers the controls insurers now ask for.

How to use these numbers when you get a quote

Use the index to check that a quote is in the published range for its scope, not to pick the cheapest provider.

  1. Ask every provider for a per-user (or per-endpoint) monthly price and a written list of what it includes.
  2. Find the matching service below and check the figure against sources with the same unit and scope.
  3. If a quote is well above the range, ask what is included that the range does not cover: on-site hours, 24/7 security monitoring, compliance work and onboarding fees are the usual reasons.
  4. If a quote is well below, ask what is excluded. Work billed hourly outside the plan ($75 to $250 an hour for standard break-fix and up to $350 for after-hours escalations in published guides) can erase a low monthly price 34.
  5. Compare contract terms as closely as price. Our guide on how to choose an MSP lists the clauses to check.

If you want a quote to compare against these numbers, the form on this page sends your request to one provider, who replies by email within one business day.

How we built this index

We started from the price sources already cited across this site, then searched for other published US prices for each service dated 2024 to 2026: provider pricing guides, vendor list prices, named surveys, insurer data and government data. A second reviewer who did not collect the figures opened every source page on October 13, 2026 and confirmed each figure, its unit, its date and what it covers.

We excluded sources that did not state US prices, pages we could not confirm, and anything from forums or AI summaries. Kaseya's survey is the one figure from a global sample (mostly the Americas), and its row says so. We do not average across sources. Where a figure is one provider's own price or estimate, the table says so. Most published IT prices come from companies that sell the service, so treat them as asking prices, not market data.

All other entries are individual providers' published guides or price lists, so each reflects one company's view. Syncro's 2023 report (average $151 per user) was left out because it is dated 2023.

Kaseya's 2023 survey found 30% of MSPs do not offer per-device pricing at all. VC3's per-device figures carry no billing period on the page, so they are marked not comparable.

Only four publishers give numeric BDR prices. Sources measure different things: Sequentur and BRITECITY give monthly totals for small offices, Datastrive prices per server, and AWS lists a raw cloud service rate (about $20 per server per month at 730 hours, before storage and compute, our arithmetic). Simply IT says full BDR is "a few hundred dollars a month for a small office" but gives no number, so it is not listed. Datastrive (per server) and AWS (hourly cloud rate) are marked not comparable.

Most named MDR vendors (Arctic Wolf, Sophos, Rapid7, CrowdStrike Falcon Complete) publish no price. Huntress's $8.99 is its list MSRP; its 100-endpoint example price is $7.99.

Sources disagree sharply because they price different things: Flamingo's $1,000 floor is an SMB retainer, BD Emerson's $5,000 to $25,000 covers 100 to 1,000 employees, and Radicl's range is annual. Blumira and Huntress publish per-employee and per-data-source list prices that only become a monthly total once headcount or source count is known. Many small firms buy MDR per endpoint instead of a SOC retainer. Radicl (annual), Blumira (per employee) and Huntress (per data source) are marked not comparable.

Five publishers, each with separate external and internal figures (two entries per publisher). All are pen testing firms describing the market or their own quotes; Blaze says its figures draw partly on about 900 quotes it sent in 2025. External tests for a small perimeter cluster at $4,000 to $10,000. Compass's page is titled for 2026 but dated June 3, 2025. Upper ends marked + on the source pages are open ended. Blaze Information Security entries are marked not verified because the firm operates from Europe and Brazil and does not state US pricing, which leaves four verified publishers.

BLS is the only government source and the main entry. Wages exclude benefits; BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation (June 2026) puts benefits at 30.0% of private industry compensation, so total cost is roughly wages divided by 0.70 (about $141,600 on the $99,130 median, our calculation). The Strategic Micro Systems figure is an MSP's estimate and is shown for contrast. The hourly BLS figure and the fully loaded MSP estimate are marked not comparable to the annual median wage.

TechInsurance and Insureon are sister brands using the same customer data, so their $129 a month figures are not independent. Sources disagree sharply because coverage differs: The Hartford's $320 a year is data breach coverage and Hiscox's examples use a $250,000 limit, while Insureon cites limits of $1 million to $5 million and Embroker's $1,200 to $7,000 covers businesses generally. Premiums depend on limit, deductible, industry, revenue and security controls. Insureon's entry now uses its own annual figure ($1,552) to match the per year unit.

Common questions

How much do managed IT services cost per user?

Published 2026 provider guides most often put fully managed IT at $100 to $250 per user per month 35. Individual sources run up to $400 for fully hosted or cloud packages 2. Kaseya's 2023 survey found $50 to $100 per user was the most common band at that time 1.

What is the average cost of managed IT services?

There is no current neutral survey that measures an average. The newest named survey with price bands is Kaseya's 2023 MSP benchmark 1, and every 2026 figure comes from providers' own guides. That is why this index shows each source's range instead of one average.

How much does MDR cost per endpoint?

Published prices for mainstream endpoint MDR start around $8 to $10 per endpoint per month, and one security firm puts the typical range at $8 to $25 8. Huntress lists managed EDR at $8.99 per endpoint 16. Bundles that add network, cloud and identity monitoring cost more.

How much does a penetration test cost in 2026?

A small external network test starts around $4,000 to $5,000, and published ranges for external tests run to $12,000 to $30,000 18192024. Internal network tests usually cost more, up to $35,000 to $40,000 1820, and web application tests run from about $3,500 to $35,000 depending on the application 24. Price depends mainly on the number of IP addresses, applications and user roles in scope.

How much does a vCISO cost per month?

Published retainers for companies with up to 50 employees run $1,500 to $4,000 a month, and ranges for larger organizations reach $20,000 21. The price depends mostly on how many days a month the vCISO works with you and whether compliance work is included.

Is outsourced IT cheaper than hiring an IT person?

For smaller companies it usually is. A systems administrator's median pay was $99,130 in May 2025 before benefits 7, while 25 users at $100 to $250 per user comes to $30,000 to $75,000 a year. At $250 per user, the managed price reaches that median wage at about 33 users. A managed team also covers vacations and sick days and brings more skills, though after-hours work is often billed separately.

Can I reuse the data in this index?

Yes. The index and the CSV download are free to reuse under CC BY 4.0, with credit to Clear IT Pricing and a link to this page. Each figure links to its original source, which keeps its own terms.
