The in-house figure is the median salary for network and computer systems administrators (BLS OEWS May 2025 via O*NET OnLine, Albany-Schenectady-Troy, NY: $95,140) divided by 0.70, because benefits are 30% of total compensation (BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation, June 2026). - IT support
- IT support for a business is the ongoing help that keeps staff productive and systems secure: answering user requests, maintaining devices and networks, managing accounts and fixing problems.
Managed IT services in Albany: cost and value
A Capital Region firm with 10 to 100 employees will usually be quoted $100 to $250 per user per month for full managed IT, based on 2026 provider guides 12. At 25 users that is $30,000 to $75,000 a year.
Local wages sit a bit under the national level: $95,140 for systems administrators and $61,190 for help desk specialists in May 2025, against national medians of $99,130 and $61,860 3689. Even so, one admin costs about $135,900 a year with benefits by our calculation 7, and that person cannot cover every shift or skill.
Some Albany providers quote per device rather than per user, which suits offices with shared workstations. In Kaseya's 2023 survey, the per-device price MSPs charged most often fell between $50 and $100 a month 10. Either way, ask what is excluded: projects, after-hours work and on-site visits are the usual extras.

Albany's business mix: state government, hospitals and chips
The State of New York is the metro's largest employer with 51,500 workers, and government makes up 22 percent of nonfarm payrolls 11. BLS counted 105,000 government jobs in the metro in August 2026 (preliminary), ahead of education and health services at 89,400 and professional and business services at 64,300 19. Contractors, law firms, associations and consultants that handle state data can expect state security questionnaires.
Healthcare includes the largest private employers. Albany Medical Health System employs 16,000 people and St. Peter's Health Partners about 11,000 11. Practices and vendors around them need HIPAA safeguards; see our HIPAA compliance services page.
Semiconductors are the growth story. GlobalFoundries announced an $11.6 billion expansion in the area in February 2024, backed by $1.5 billion in federal CHIPS funding and a planned $600 million from New York State 11. Suppliers to that work need strong protection for design and process data.
Albany County had 9,465 establishments in 2023, with 2,323 employing 10 to 49 people and 595 employing 50 to 249 4. It also had 362 computer systems design and related services establishments 4.

Get my Albany quoteNew York rules: the SHIELD Act and the 30-day breach deadline
Every business that holds computerized private information of New York residents must maintain reasonable safeguards under the SHIELD Act, General Business Law 899-bb 12. Small businesses, defined as fewer than 50 employees, under $3 million in annual revenue for three years, or under $5 million in assets, may scale safeguards to their size, but they are not exempt 12.
New York's breach law sets a firm outer limit. Since a December 2024 amendment, businesses must notify affected residents no later than 30 days after discovering a breach 5. They must also notify the Attorney General, the Department of State and the State Police about the timing, content and distribution of the notices, with no minimum number of residents 5.
Banks, insurers and other firms licensed by the Department of Financial Services face more. Under 23 NYCRR Part 500, MFA has been required for anyone accessing any information system since November 1, 2025, unless the CISO approves a compensating control, along with a written asset inventory 1314. Smaller licensees may qualify for a limited exemption, but it does not remove MFA or the asset inventory 15.
Applied to a 12-person Albany insurance agency, the rules stack up. As a small business under the SHIELD Act it may scale its safeguards, but it still needs them 12. As a DFS licensee it may qualify for the limited exemption, yet it must still use MFA for remote access and privileged accounts 14. It must also report a cybersecurity incident to DFS within 72 hours of determining one occurred 15. If client records are exposed, affected residents must hear within 30 days 5.
New York ranked fourth among states for FBI IC3 complaints in 2025, with 45,255 complaints and about $1.23 billion in reported losses 16.
Cybersecurity services in Albany
Albany firms should build their security program so it can be shown to a regulator, with written safeguards, a named owner and evidence that each control runs. That is how a business demonstrates the SHIELD Act's reasonable safeguards.
Payment fraud deserves its own control. Vendors that bill state agencies or hospital systems receive large, predictable payments, the kind fake invoices aim at, and business email compromise drew about $3.05 billion in reported losses nationally in 2025 16. Confirm any change to bank details by phone, using a number you already have.
The working core: MFA on every account, which Microsoft research found reduced compromise risk by 99.22% 17; endpoint detection and response; patching; staff training; and backups tested by restoring. Add an incident plan sized for New York's 30-day clock. Our written information security plan guide and small business cybersecurity guide help you document it.
IT consulting, co-managed IT and picking an Albany provider
Organizations with one IT generalist often need backup for that person rather than a replacement. Co-managed IT adds monitoring, tooling and senior help, at $45 to $175 per user per month in one provider's 2026 pricing 18. See co-managed IT and our IT consulting guide for project work.
Ask Albany providers:
-
Can you help document our SHIELD Act safeguards?
-
Do you support DFS-regulated clients, and who files the 72-hour incident notice?
-
How do you handle on-site visits across Albany, Schenectady and Rensselaer counties, and how fast after a winter storm takes down an office?
-
Who holds admin credentials if we leave? Our guide to choosing an MSP has more questions.
