The in-house figure is the median salary for network and computer systems administrators (BLS OEWS May 2025 via O*NET OnLine, Detroit-Warren-Dearborn, MI: $96,400) divided by 0.70, because benefits are 30% of total compensation (BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation, June 2026). This is our calculation. Licenses, hardware and projects are extra either way, and one person cannot cover every hour.

- IT company (managed service provider)
- An IT company that offers managed services takes ongoing responsibility for a client's computers, servers, network, cloud accounts and security, and bills a recurring fee instead of charging for each repair.
Managed IT services in Detroit: typical pricing
Detroit quotes for managed IT usually land at $100 to $250 per user per month, based on published 2026 pricing guides 12. Some providers price by device instead: $50 to $100 per workstation and $100 to $400 per server per month in one 2026 guide 9. Device pricing can suit a plant where several shift workers share one terminal.
The in-house comparison uses local BLS data. In the Detroit-Warren-Dearborn area, the May 2025 median wage was $96,400 for network and computer systems administrators and $59,040 for computer user support specialists 67. Benefits are 30% of private-sector compensation 8, so the loaded costs are about $137,700 and $84,300 a year (our calculation).
At 25 users, a managed plan totals $30,000 to $75,000 a year. That is less than one loaded hire, though a large plant may still want one person on site and a provider behind them. Our managed IT pricing guide explains the quote structure.
IT support for Detroit manufacturers and suppliers
Manufacturing defines Detroit's IT needs more than in most metros. In August 2026 the Detroit metro had 235,400 manufacturing jobs out of 2,042,000 nonfarm jobs, about 11.5% 3. Professional and business services (369,600) and education and health services (342,400) were larger 3, and many engineering, logistics and staffing firms in those sectors connect to plants as vendors and contractors.
Plant IT is different from office IT:
- Production machines often run old operating systems a vendor will not let you update. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025, and paid extended updates cost $61 per device in year one, doubling each year 10.
- Office and production networks should be separated so ransomware on a laptop cannot stop a line.
- Patch windows must follow shift schedules, not the provider's convenience.
The Windows 10 cost adds up quickly on a plant floor. At $61 a device, a shop with 20 Windows 10 PCs tied to production equipment would pay $1,220 for the first year of extended updates 10. Because the price doubles, year two would cost about $2,440 (our calculation) 10. Extended updates last three years at most 10, so the budget should also cover replacing those PCs or moving them onto an isolated network segment.
Suppliers on defense programs face one more layer. DFARS 252.204-7012 requires contractors handling covered defense information to implement NIST SP 800-171 and report incidents to DoD within 72 hours 11. CMMC is paused in Phase 1 after DoD suspended Phase 2 on July 13, 2026, and self-assessments still apply 12. Our manufacturing IT guide and CMMC overview go deeper.

Get my Detroit quoteWayne County's business base and local IT companies
Wayne County had 33,699 business establishments in 2023, including 7,417 with 10 to 49 employees and 1,766 with 50 to 249 4. Those 9,183 midsize locations are where outsourced IT support is most common.
The county also had 381 establishments in computer systems design and related services 13. That Census category covers MSPs as well as software developers and consultancies, so read it as the size of the local IT sector, not the number of providers you could hire. The count covers Wayne County only, so providers based in Oakland or Macomb counties are not included.
Michigan breach rules and the state's privacy picture
Michigan requires a business to notify affected Michigan residents without unreasonable delay after a breach 14. The law sets no Attorney General notice requirement, but when more than 1,000 Michigan residents are notified, the consumer reporting agencies must be told 1415.
Michigan has no comprehensive consumer privacy law as of October 2026 1617. Federal and contract rules fill the gap for many Detroit firms: HIPAA for health care, the FTC Safeguards Rule for non-bank lenders, dealership finance and tax preparers 18, and DFARS for defense suppliers.
Michigan residents filed 22,191 complaints with the FBI's IC3 in 2025, reporting $381.1 million in losses, 14th among states by complaint count 5. Nationally, business email compromise caused about $3.05 billion in reported losses 5. Supplier payment fraud through a spoofed email is a direct risk in a supply chain built on purchase orders and invoices.
Cybersecurity services in Detroit
Detroit firms should buy security in this order: MFA, endpoint detection and response, email filtering, then backups that are tested by restoring them. Microsoft research found MFA cut account compromise risk by 99.22% 19, and mainstream managed detection and response runs $8 to $25 per endpoint per month 20.
The 2026 Verizon DBIR found exploited vulnerabilities were the top entry point at 31%, and ransomware appeared in 48% of breaches 2122. For a plant, the restore test matters most. Ask your provider how long it would take to bring production scheduling back from backup. Our cybersecurity for small business guide sets out a starting order for the rest.
IT consulting, co-managed IT and choosing a Detroit provider
Larger Detroit firms with an internal IT lead often choose co-managed support. Their cost depends on scope, from $45 to $175 per user per month in one provider's 2026 figures 23. Our co-managed IT guide explains the division of work. Project-based IT consulting, such as an ERP server move, is commonly billed at $150 to $250 per hour in one 2026 published estimate 24.
Before you sign, ask whether the provider has supported plant networks, whether technicians can reach your sites within an agreed time, and how you get your data back if you leave. Our MSP selection guide lists more questions. For other sites in the region, compare managed IT in Cleveland, Columbus and Pittsburgh, or go back to the managed IT services overview.
