The in-house figure is the median salary for network and computer systems administrators (BLS OEWS May 2025 via O*NET OnLine, Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia, NC-SC: $89,990) divided by 0.70, because benefits are 30% of total compensation (BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation, June 2026). - Managed IT services
- Managed IT services are a contracted model in which an outside provider takes responsibility for a business's day-to-day IT, including user support, system upkeep, security monitoring and backups, for a monthly fee.
Managed IT services in Charlotte: pricing
Charlotte managed IT quotes generally fall in the $100 to $250 per user per month range from published pricing guides; plans with a full security stack can reach $300 or more 4. Per-device quotes typically run $50 to $100 per workstation and $100 to $400 per server in one provider's 2026 guide 4.
In Charlotte the systems administrator median sits below the national figure. In May 2025 it was $89,990, against $99,130 nationally, and the computer user support specialist median was $60,220 25. At the BLS benefits share of 30% 3, a Charlotte administrator costs about $128,600 a year by our calculation. That still exceeds the $30,000 to $75,000 a 25-person office would pay for managed IT, and one person cannot cover nights, vacations and security monitoring alone.

Charlotte's banking economy and what it means for IT
Mecklenburg County had 36,472 business establishments in 2023: 8,445 with 10 to 49 employees and 2,089 with 50 to 249 7. The county also had 811 computer systems design and related services establishments 7.
Banking defines Charlotte. HUD describes it as the second-largest US banking center after New York by assets under management 6. Wells Fargo (30,000) and Bank of America (15,000) are two of the metro's top three employers, and financial activities make up about 9% of payrolls against 6% nationally 6. In August 2026, financial activities employed about 128,700 people in the metro and professional and business services 230,100 (preliminary) 9.
The effect reaches well beyond the banks:
- Vendors to banks (software firms, consultants, staffing and marketing agencies) face vendor risk reviews asking for MFA, encryption, backups, incident response plans and evidence of each.
- Non-bank financial firms such as mortgage brokers, lenders and tax preparers fall under the FTC Safeguards Rule 10. It requires a Qualified Individual, MFA and encryption, plus a written risk assessment once a firm holds data on 5,000 or more consumers 10. See IT for financial services firms.
- Health care. Atrium Health is the metro's largest employer with 37,000 workers, and Novant Health employs 11,700 11. Their affiliated practices and vendors often need HIPAA compliance services.

Get my Charlotte quoteNorth Carolina breach and privacy rules
North Carolina requires the Attorney General to hear about every breach that triggers resident notice. Businesses must notify affected residents without unreasonable delay, and whenever any resident is notified, the Consumer Protection Division of the Attorney General's Office must also be notified without unreasonable delay, with no minimum count 8. If more than 1,000 people are notified at once, nationwide consumer reporting agencies must be told as well 8.
No comprehensive consumer privacy statute has been enacted in North Carolina as of October 2026 12. For most Charlotte firms, the stricter obligations come from federal rules and contracts: the FTC Safeguards Rule for non-bank financial firms, HIPAA for health care, and security clauses in bank vendor agreements. Some contracts set their own notice windows, so check them when you write your incident plan.
Have counsel confirm which of these reach your firm.
Cybersecurity services in Charlotte
Charlotte cybersecurity services are often bought to pass someone else's review. North Carolina residents filed 25,940 complaints with the FBI's IC3 in 2025, ninth among states, and reported $432 million in losses 13. Firms that handle wires and loan closings are exposed to business email compromise, which drew about $3.05 billion in reported losses across the country 13.
A Charlotte security program should include MFA, monitored endpoint detection and response, email security, encryption, tested backups and a written incident response plan, plus the reports that prove each one to a bank's vendor risk team.
Non-bank financial firms under the Safeguards Rule that hold data on 5,000 or more consumers have specific testing duties: annual penetration testing and vulnerability assessments every six months unless they run continuous monitoring 10. Published pricing for small external network penetration tests starts around $5,000 14. See our penetration testing guide and cybersecurity for small business.
IT consulting and co-managed IT in Charlotte
Charlotte firms that already employ an IT generalist often add a provider through co-managed IT. One provider's published estimate puts it at $45 to $175 per user per month, depending on whether it adds EDR, patching or a security operations center 15. Your staff keep the relationships with users and bank clients; the provider supplies tools and coverage. See co-managed IT.
Project rates for outside IT consultants run $150 to $250 an hour in one 2026 guide 16. Common Charlotte projects include preparing for a bank vendor risk assessment, writing a Safeguards Rule risk assessment and incident plan, HIPAA risk analysis for clinics and Microsoft 365 security reviews. See IT consulting.
How to pick a Charlotte managed service provider
Choose a Charlotte provider that can help you pass a client's security review as well as fix laptops. Ask for examples of the documentation they produce, then ask:
- Have you helped clients answer bank or insurer vendor risk questionnaires?
- Can you act as or support our Qualified Individual under the FTC Safeguards Rule?
- Which of our offices get on-site visits, and how is travel billed?
- What do we get back, including admin credentials and documentation, if we leave?
If your company also has offices in Raleigh, Atlanta or Richmond, find out whether those offices get the same response terms. Our MSP selection guide lists more questions, and the managed IT services overview explains common contract terms. A form request goes to one local provider or advisory partner, and you will hear back by email within one business day.
Common questions
How much do managed IT services cost in Charlotte?
Charlotte quotes usually track the published range of $100 to $250 per user per month 1, or $30,000 to $75,000 a year for a 25-user firm. Firms that need heavy security documentation for bank clients can expect quotes toward the higher end.
What does an IT administrator earn in Charlotte?
Does the FTC Safeguards Rule apply to my Charlotte firm?
It applies to non-bank financial institutions such as mortgage brokers, lenders, finance companies and tax preparers 10. Covered firms need a Qualified Individual, a written risk assessment, MFA and encryption 10. Firms with data on fewer than 5,000 consumers are exempt from some, but not all, requirements.
After a breach, who does a Charlotte business have to notify?
Is there a North Carolina privacy law like California's CCPA?
No. North Carolina has no comprehensive consumer data privacy law as of October 2026 12. Federal rules such as the FTC Safeguards Rule and HIPAA, and client contracts, usually set the stricter requirements.
What cybersecurity services do Charlotte bank vendors need?
Expect to show MFA, endpoint detection and response, encryption, tested backups and a written incident response plan, with evidence for each. Some reviews also ask for a recent penetration test, which starts around $5,000 for a small external network in published pricing 14.
