The in-house figure is the median salary for network and computer systems administrators (BLS OEWS May 2025 via O*NET OnLine, Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue, WA: $104,440) divided by 0.70, because benefits are 30% of total compensation (BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation, June 2026). This is our calculation. Licenses, hardware and projects are extra either way, and one person cannot cover every hour.

- Managed IT services
- Managed IT services are IT support, maintenance and security delivered by an outside provider under a monthly contract, with the provider responsible for keeping users, devices and systems working rather than billing per repair.
Managed IT services costs in Seattle versus hiring
Managed IT in Seattle costs the same $100 to $250 per user per month that published provider guides list nationally 1, while local IT pay runs well above national levels. That gap makes outsourcing look cheaper here than in most markets.
The gap shows up first at the entry level. A computer user support specialist in the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue metro earned a median $78,330 in May 2025 3, against a national median of $61,860 5. Systems administrators earned $104,440 locally 2, above the national $99,130 18. With benefits making up 30% of employer compensation costs 4, a single local help desk hire costs about $111,900 a year, based on BLS data.
Run that against a 25-person office and the help desk role alone costs more than the top of the managed range, $75,000, before you add anyone who can manage servers or security. For a breakdown of what moves the per-user price, see our managed IT pricing guide.
The Seattle business picture: a tech economy with small offices underneath
King County had 70,376 business establishments in 2023, of which 14,632 had 10 to 49 employees and 3,364 had 50 to 249 6. Those counts are locations, not companies, and they show that for every large tech employer there are thousands of firms sized for outsourced IT.
The headline employers are well known. HUD lists The Boeing Company, Amazon and Microsoft as the three largest in the Seattle metropolitan division and reports that tech made up 30% of the metro's economic output in 2024 9. In August 2026 the metro counted 384,700 professional and business services jobs, 315,700 in education and health services, 168,600 in manufacturing and 132,100 in the information sector, out of 2,143,900 nonfarm jobs (preliminary) 8.
That mix creates two very different buyers:
- Firms without technical staff (law, accounting, clinics, design, property management) that want a provider to run everything.
- Tech-literate firms (software startups, engineering suppliers to aerospace and manufacturing) whose staff can handle laptops but want help with security, compliance evidence and after-hours monitoring.
King County also had 2,117 establishments in computer systems design and related services in 2023 7, a category that includes MSPs along with software and consulting firms.

Get my Seattle quoteWashington rules: breach notice, health data and biometrics
Washington gives businesses 30 calendar days after discovering a breach to notify affected residents 10. If one breach requires notice to more than 500 Washington residents, the Attorney General must also be notified within 30 days of discovery 10.
The state has no comprehensive consumer privacy law as of October 2026 12, but it has something narrower that catches many businesses off guard. The My Health My Data Act regulates the collection, sharing and sale of consumer health data by any business operating in Washington, and took effect March 31, 2024 (June 30, 2024 for small businesses) 11. Businesses outside HIPAA, such as wellness, fitness and retail firms, may hold data that counts. Washington's biometric identifier law separately bars enrolling a biometric identifier in a database for a commercial purpose without first giving notice, obtaining consent or providing a way to prevent later commercial use 13.
For IT, these rules translate into knowing where sensitive data lives, who can reach it and how fast you can tell what was exposed. Our healthcare IT guide covers the health side. Ask counsel to map these rules to the data you hold.
Cybersecurity services in Seattle
Seattle firms should treat vendor and supplier access as their main security risk. Washington residents filed 25,619 complaints with the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center in 2025, reporting $458 million in losses, 11th among states on both measures 14. Those are reported complaints, not unique victims.
Seattle's supplier-heavy economy adds a specific risk. The 2026 Verizon Data Breach Investigations Report found third-party involvement in 48% of breaches, and exploitation of vulnerabilities was the top way in at 31% 17. A small firm that connects to a larger customer's systems is both a target and a path. The cybersecurity services worth paying for here are patching on a schedule you can prove, MFA everywhere, endpoint detection and response, and a written record of who has access to what. Our small business cybersecurity guide prices each of these. If an incident is happening now, call your cyber insurer's hotline first if you have a policy, report to the FBI at ic3.gov, and keep systems intact until evidence is preserved.
IT consulting and co-managed IT in Seattle
Co-managed IT is often the better fit for Seattle firms that already employ technical people. The provider brings monitoring tools, a security stack and backup staff, and your team keeps the work it does well. One provider's published 2026 estimate puts co-managed IT at $45 to $175 per user per month, depending on how much of the security layer is included 15. Our co-managed IT guide explains how to split responsibilities.
For planning rather than daily support, a virtual CIO can set the roadmap and budget. Published vCIO rates commonly run $200 to $300 an hour or $2,000 to $10,000 a month, and some MSPs include the role in managed plans 16. Our IT consulting page covers when project help is enough.
Choosing an IT company in Seattle
Judge a Seattle IT company on how it covers your locations and how it handles regulated data. Ask where its technicians are based and what an on-site visit costs, especially if you also have staff south toward Portland or in California offices in Sacramento or San Francisco. Ask how it would help you meet Washington's 30-day breach deadline, and whether it has supported clients that handle consumer health data. Then get the exit terms in writing. Our checklist for choosing an MSP has the full question set, and the managed IT services overview explains a standard scope.

What does an in-house IT person cost in Seattle?
Does the My Health My Data Act apply to my Seattle business?

Can a managed service provider in Seattle support our in-house developers?
Yes. Co-managed arrangements let your staff keep control while the provider adds monitoring, security tools and after-hours cover. One published 2026 estimate puts it at $45 to $175 per user per month 15.
What IT consulting do Seattle startups usually need?
Most need a security baseline that larger customers will accept, plus a plan for identity, devices and backups as headcount grows. A virtual CIO typically costs $2,000 to $10,000 a month in published rates, or is bundled into a managed plan 16.
