Business IT Support

Good business IT support means a staffed help desk with written response targets, coverage for the hours you work, remote fixes in minutes with on-site visits when needed, and a clear path to senior engineers. Published provider guides put it at $100 to $250 per user per month under a managed plan, or $75 to $250 per hour for break-fix help 1.

Business IT support
Business IT support is the technical help a company buys to keep its staff working: answering user problems, fixing computers and networks, managing accounts and devices, and escalating harder issues to engineers, whether delivered by an in-house team or an outside provider.

What good business IT support looks like

Good business IT support answers quickly, fixes most problems remotely the same day, and tells you in writing what it covers and how fast it will respond.

The marks of good support:

  • One easy way to ask for help. Phone, email and a portal that all create a ticket, so nothing gets lost in someone's inbox.
  • Written response targets by priority. A server down or a suspected hack should get a much faster response than a new mouse. There is no industry-standard response time, so each provider sets its own. Get theirs in the contract.
  • Documentation of your setup. Your network, accounts and vendors are written down, so any technician can help, not only the one who set it up.
  • Proactive work, not only fixes. Patching, backup checks and security alert review happen whether or not anyone calls.
  • Plain reporting. A monthly summary of tickets, open issues, patch status and backup results.
  • Clear ownership of access. Your company owns the admin accounts, licenses and domain; the provider has delegated access.

If you are a small office still deciding what level of help you need, our small business IT support page covers the minimum setup and costs at that size.

Response times, coverage hours and escalation

Set response targets by priority, match coverage hours to when your people work, and make sure every ticket has a path to a senior engineer. These three terms matter more in a support contract than almost anything else.

Response targets. A typical contract defines three or four priority levels and a response target for each, such as an urgent level for outages affecting the whole company, and a low level for requests that can wait. No neutral survey of standard response times exists, so compare providers on their written numbers, and ask whether "response" means a human working the issue or an automated reply.

Coverage hours. Many plans cover business hours on weekdays and bill after-hours work separately. One 2026 provider guide puts after-hours incident fees at $150 to $350 per hour on top of the monthly retainer 6. If you run shifts, a warehouse, a clinic with evening hours or staff in several time zones, price 24/7 coverage up front.

Escalation. Support is usually organized in tiers. Tier 1 handles passwords, email and common software problems. Tier 2 handles harder device, network and application issues. Tier 3 is senior engineers and vendor escalation. Our help desk outsourcing page explains the tiers and per-ticket pricing in detail.

Security incidents. Ask what happens when a ticket turns out to be an attack. Who is called, how fast, and is incident response included or billed separately? Our incident response page covers what that work involves.

Remote vs on-site business computer support

Most business computer support is now done remotely, and on-site visits should be reserved for hardware, networking and moves. Remote tools let a technician see the screen, push fixes and install updates in minutes, without travel charges.

Remote support handles: - Password resets, account lockouts and MFA problems - Email, Microsoft 365 and Teams issues - Software installs, updates and printer drivers - Most performance and error problems on a computer

On-site support is still needed for: - New office network setup, firewall and Wi-Fi installation - Failed hardware, cabling and servers - Office moves and new workstation rollouts - Conference room and phone system problems

Ask every provider whether on-site visits are included in the monthly fee, billed hourly, or limited to a set number per month, and whether there is a trip charge. A provider that is far away can still serve you well remotely, but check how quickly someone can be on site when a firewall fails. Our managed IT services near me page explains how to weigh distance.

Network work deserves its own scope. If you are setting up a new office, get the network design, firewall, Wi-Fi and cabling quoted as a project, separate from the monthly fee. See managed firewall services for ongoing firewall costs, which run $50 to $300 per month in one vendor's figures 7.

Support models compared

Most businesses with 10 or more staff do best with managed IT. Break-fix suits very small, simple offices, and co-managed support suits companies that already employ IT staff. The table above summarizes the options and their typical published prices.

Break-fix costs $75 to $250 per hour, with emergency rates of $300 or more 1. It is the cheapest option in a quiet month and the most expensive in a bad one. Nobody owns patching, backup checks or security alerts between calls.

Managed IT costs $100 to $250 per user per month in published provider guides 16, and plans with advanced security can reach $300 or more. Help desk, monitoring and patching are included. See our managed IT services pricing page for what drives quotes up or down.

In-house support means hiring. A computer user support specialist earned a median of $61,860 in May 2025 3, and a systems administrator $99,130 8. Our outsourced IT services page compares the full cost of a hire with outsourcing.

Co-managed IT adds a provider alongside your own staff. One provider's published estimate is $45 to $175 per user per month depending on scope 4. See co-managed IT for how the work is divided.

How to measure an IT support provider

Measure a provider on whether problems get fixed quickly, whether they stay fixed, and whether the proactive work gets done. Ask for a monthly report that shows these numbers and review it every quarter.

Useful measures:

  • Response time by priority, compared with the targets in your contract.
  • Resolution time, especially for urgent tickets.
  • First-contact resolution: the share of tickets fixed on the first call or chat.
  • Repeat tickets: the same problem coming back means the root cause was not fixed.
  • User satisfaction: a one-click rating after each ticket is enough.
  • Patch compliance: the share of computers fully updated. Vulnerability exploitation was the top way into breaches in the 2026 Verizon DBIR, at 31% 9.
  • Backup success and restore tests: dates of the last successful backup and the last tested restore for each system.
  • Open security items: devices without EDR, accounts without MFA, unsupported operating systems.

Hold a short quarterly review with the provider to go over these numbers, upcoming projects and budget. Some providers include that planning as a virtual CIO service. If the numbers are not available, that tells you something about how the provider runs. Our how to choose an MSP guide has more questions to ask before you sign.

Common questions

How much does business IT support cost?

Managed business IT support runs $100 to $250 per user per month in published provider guides, and break-fix help costs $75 to $250 per hour 1. Syncro's 2023 survey found an average MSP hourly rate of $110 2. After-hours work is often billed on top.

What does business IT support include?

A managed support plan usually includes a help desk, remote fixes, device monitoring, patching, user account management and vendor coordination. Many plans also include security tools and backups. Projects, new hardware and on-site visits are often billed separately, so check the contract.

What is the difference between IT support and managed IT services?

IT support usually means fixing problems when users ask for help. Managed IT services add proactive work for a flat monthly fee: monitoring, patching, backups, security and planning. Most managed IT plans include IT support as one part.

Is remote IT support enough for a business?

Remote support handles most day-to-day problems, including passwords, email, software and many computer issues. You still need on-site help for network installs, failed hardware, cabling and office moves. Ask how on-site visits are priced before you sign.

What response time should I expect from business tech support?

There is no industry standard, so each provider sets its own targets by priority level. Get the targets in writing, make sure an urgent outage gets a much faster response than routine requests, and confirm that response means a person working the issue. Then track actual results monthly.

Do I need 24/7 IT support?

You need 24/7 coverage if staff work evenings, weekends or shifts, or if downtime outside business hours would stop revenue. Otherwise business-hours support plus after-hours security monitoring is often enough. One provider guide puts after-hours incident fees at $150 to $350 per hour when not included 6.
